This dissertation, The Development of Computer Education in China, addresses the issue of advancing computer education in China in order to meet the demand of rapid development of the computer world and help achieve the goals of Chinese modernization.
The dissertation consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the background and the problems of developing computer education in China. Chapter 2 generally reviews the development of Chinese education in its ancient period, republican period, reconstruction period, period of cultural revolution and present period. Chapter 3 explains the historical development of the Chinese computer industry and computer education in mainland universities and high schools. Chapter 4 discusses the major obstacles to computer education in China. Chapter 5 gives an overview of current computer development in the United States and Japan. It also outlines the challenge of developing Fifth Generation Computers. The key strategies and approaches for computer development in China are discussed in Chapter 6.
The final chapter offers the conclusion that the future emphasis on Chinese computer development should be in these areas: making key parts of hardware and up-to-date software, improving the computer management and manpower training as well as education on different levels. It also confirms the importance of continuing to pursue Chinese character recognition, as well as developing and evaluating computer assisted software.
Finally, the official document of Criterion of Software Evaluation, a table of contents of a standard computer text for Beijing high school students, and a script of a model LOGO program are attached in Appendix I, II, and III.
