Abstract

Database Management Systems provides comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the fundamentals of database systems. Coherent explanations and practical examples have made this one of the leading texts in the field. The third edition continues in this tradition, enhancing it with more practical material. The new edition has been reorganized to allow more flexibility in the way the course is taught. Now, instructors can easily choose whether they would like to teach a course which emphasizes database application development or a course that emphasizes database systems issues. New overview chapters at the beginning of parts make it possible to skip other chapters in the part if you don't want the detail. More applications and examples have been added throughout the book, including SQL and Oracle examples. The applied flavor is further enhanced by the two new database applications chapters.Table of contents1 Foundations1 Overview of Database Systems2 Introduction to Database Design3 The Relational Model4 Relational Algebra and Calculus5 SQL: Queries, Constraints, Triggers2 Application Development6 Database Application Development 7 Internet Applications3 Storage and Indexing8 Overview of Storage and Indexing9 Storing Data: Disks and Files10 Tree-Structured Indexing 11 Hash-Based Indexing 4 Query Evaluation12 Overview of Query Evaluation13 External Sorting14 Evaluating Relational Operators15 A Typical Relational Query Optimizer5 Transaction Management16 Overview of Transaction Management17 Concurrency Control18 Crash Recovery6 Database Design and Tuning19 Schema Refinement and Normal Forms20 Physical Database Design and Tuning21 Security and Authorization7 Additional Topics22 Parallel and Distributed Databases23 Object-Database Systems24 Deductive Databases25 Data Warehousing and Decision Support26 Data Mining27 Information Retrieval and XML Data28 Spatial Data Management29 Further Reading 30 The Minibase Software
