The authors explain that the increasing popularity of the C language has prompted them to issue a special version of their classic book [1] in which all 200 or so FORTRAN programs have been translated. A particularly good feature of this translation is that they avoid the more exotic structures that are possible in C. This makes the programs easily readable and, in my opinion, more useful. Due to fundamental differences between the two languages, the translation is not without side effects. The authors cope with these by providing two sets of programs: function definitions and utilities. The latter set includes a package for complex arithmetic. As with the original FORTRAN volume, all workers interested in C will regard this excellent and inexpensive text as essential, especially if they are concerned with special I/O devices.
