In order to make effective use of this work, readers will need some background in complex variable functions and an understanding of the basics of continuous-time signals and systems theory. The introductory chapter describes the fundamentals of time-domain and frequency-domain characterization of deterministic and random discrete-time signals and of linear time-invariant (LTI) discrete-time systems. The other four chapters go into depth about basic mathematical concepts in the field, including the z-transform, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and its efficient computation by fast Fourier transform algorithms, and the discrete Hilbert transform and its applications to bandpass signal representation. The authors present applications of the sampling theorem to the representation of a continuous-time signal by its samples, and to multirate signal processing. They also discuss the use of the DFT for spectral analysis of sinusoidal, nonstationary, and stationary random signals. The book also develops methods for the analysis and design of discrete-time systems, including system function and frequency response of LTI discrete-time systems, basic implementation structures for infinite impulse response (IIR) and finite impulse response (FIR) systems, finite-precision effects on digital implementation of these structures, and digital filter design. One of the three appendices contains the characterization of continuous-time filters, which is necessary for the design of IIR filters by impulse-response invariance and bilinear transform methods. Another appendix summarizes the representation of stochastic discrete-time signals. This edition introduces a discussion of the cosine transform; expands the treatment of sampling, multirate signal processing, and spectral analysis; and increases the number of examples and exercises. The text contains more than 100 easy-to-follow examples, and each chapter includes many basic and advanced problems. An appendix gives answers to selected basic problems, and an instructor's manual containing solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the publisher. The comprehensive coverage of fundamentals, methods, and algorithms for discrete-time signal processing makes this work both a self-contained reference manual in the field and a flexible support for both undergraduate and graduate courses.
