Hybrid Simulation deals with a rapidly evolving technology combining computer simulation (typically finite element) and physical laboratory testing of two complementary substructures. It is a cost effective alternative to shaking table test, and allows for the improved understanding of complex coupled systems. Traditionally, numerical simulation and physical tests have been uncoupled and performed separately. In this simulation paradigm the coupled nature of the simulation allows for improved understanding, and more efficient design since the factor of safety does not have to be arbitrarily inflated to account for uncertainties of uncoupling. It is a multidisciplinary technology which relies heavily on control theory, computer science, numerical techniques and finds applications in aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering.

Framework for Simulation of Hybrid Systems: Interoperation of Discrete Event and Continuous Simulators Using HLA/RTI
PADS '11: Proceedings of the 2011 IEEE Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed SimulationA hybrid system is a combination of discrete event and continuous systems that act together to perform a function not possible with any one of the individual system types alone. A simulation model for the system consists of two sub-models, a continuous ...
Adaptive Finite Element Simulation of Incompressible Flows by Hybrid Continuous-Discontinuous Galerkin Formulations
In this work we design hybrid continuous-discontinuous finite element spaces that permit discontinuities on nonmatching element interfaces of nonconforming meshes. Then we develop an equal-order stabilized finite element formulation for incompressible ...
Applicability of hybrid simulation
Hybrid simulation means performing simulation by means of hybrid processing with a hybrid processor consisting of a parallel and a sequential processor. To be able to value the applicability of hybrid simulation, it is necessary to have some knowledge ...
