Edwin Robert Ashworth

The author provides an outstanding description of virtual reality (VR) by taking us on a step-by-step tour of the industrial and research laboratories of the world. The basic purpose of the text is a survey of this new and dynamic field. The length of the material is just right. The best features of this story are the extensive personal interviews with the principal players. The text could be improved with color photographs. The references are extensive and quite varied, and the index is satisfactory. The author begins by presenting us with a new microscope of the mind, which allows the computer to present knowledge differently from the traditional analytic perspective. In the next part of the book, he shows how the reality barrier has been broken as we enter cyberspace. Immersion and navigation constitute the foundations of VR. The author continues with many fascinating stories from the industrial complex as VR moves from one plateau to another. The last part deals with VR and the future. Here, the author explores future possibilities with contributions by the leading experts in the field. Once again, our whole being and reality are stretched to new limits; it feels much like bungee-jumping at the State Fair. The general reader will be absorbed by this fascinating development.
