Abstract

It is our pleasure to present to you the Proceedings of the 4th ACM International Conference on Distributed Event-Based Systems (DEBS), taking place in Cambridge, UK. The DEBS conference serves as the principal international forum for bringing together academic and industrial researchers, practitioners, and students interested in event-based systems.

We have a very vibrant program this year, which includes three keynotes, six tutorials, 16 research papers, 5 industrial papers, a fast abstract session, a demo/poster session, and a Ph.D. Workshop. The technical program runs for four days, with the Ph.D. workshop occurring the day before, on 11 July. July 12th is reserved for tutorials. The following three days each start with a keynote: Michael J. Franklin from UC Berkeley/Truviso, Inc. on 13 July, David Jeffery from Betfair on 14 July, and Christof Fetzer from Dresden University of Technology on 15 July. The industrial sessions are scheduled on 14 July. The demo/poster and fast abstract sessions take place on 13 July. The research sessions run 13--15 July. The entire conference program is organized as plenary sessions.

This year, the program committee that selected the papers consisted of 38 members for the research track, 8 members for the industrial track, and 7 members for the poster/demo/fast abstract track. The research track PC accepted 16 submissions as full research papers (25% acceptance rate). The industrial track PC accepted 5 submissions as short industrial papers (36% acceptance rate). Our review process produced three reviews for each paper; authors were then given the opportunity to provide a rebuttal to correct factual errors on the part of the reviewers; this was followed by a discussion phase among reviewers for papers that had high variance in their ratings, and finally a shepherding process for papers that were accepted on the condition of satisfactory revisions. For the fast abstracts track, 5 short presentations will be made on new ideas or work in progress. For the demo and poster session, 8 demos and 7 posters will be presented. Demos and posters appear as 2-page contributions in the proceedings.

In its 9th year (5 years as a workshop and 4 years as a conference), DEBS is continuing to attract top level contributions from around the world, in the rapidly growing area of distributed event-based systems. The wide coverage of our technical program, in terms of the variety in the program components as well as the technical topics of the program items, is an indicator of the healthy growth in the field and the continued success of the DEBS conferences over the years.
