AHA! the next generation

ABSTRACT

AHA! is a simple Web-based adaptation engine that was originally developed to support an on-line course. This paper describes AHA! version 2.0, a new major release that aims to significantly increase the adaptive versatility of AHA! without sacrificing AHA!'s simplicity that makes it easy to use. The new features in AHA! are inspired by AHAM [4], a Dexter [6] based reference model for adaptive hypermedia systems.

      AHA!, a Web-based adaptation engine for the development of adaptive hypermedia courses, is outlined in this paper. AHA! uses a domain and a student model, and facilitates adaptive navigation support. Links are annotated so that each individual user-student knows which links are recommended, not recommend, or neutral, based on his or her individual user model. The paper is rather short; therefore, it cannot fully describe all of the system's features. Further information can be found in the papers cited, or on the authors' home pages. AHA! is one of the most well-known adaptive hypermedia systems, and also includes an authoring environment for the easy creation of adaptive hypermedia courses. It is available via the Web for anyone who wishes to work with it. Both the code, which is open source, and the system itself can be downloaded with a tutorial. Anyone can download AHA!, easily develop courses, and test them in real classes. Because of this availability, AHA! can significantly contribute to the research and evaluation of adaptive hypermedia courses by different researchers. Online Computing Reviews Service
