                The authors promote the transformation of the Internet and the World Wide Web into a powerful tool for advancing computer science and engineering, which they call the “Grid.” As part of the National Science Fo undation Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure, a specific partnership is described. The National Computational Alliance is a group of universities, national laboratories, and industrial hardware partners composed of six focus area teams: distributed computing enabling technologies, applications technologies, cosmology, scientific instrumentation, environmental hydrology, and nanomaterials. The authors describe a substantial collaborative effort that abandons the “everyone for themselves” model by addressing the high-end distributed computing and network challenge on a broad front with a group of cooperating participants. The goal is laudable, even noble, but the presentation is weak and, at times, filled with hyperbole. Put bluntly, the logic and flow of the presentation do not inspire, but confuse. Content is not lacking, but it must be mined with some effort and separated from the surrounding hype. This is only one of several papers in this issue on the National Computational Alliance and its challenges. I advise readers to look at the entire series of papers, since others present a much better perspective on the Alliance and its activities.
