Abstract
Student engagement can often be an elusive thing to accomplish, especially in an introductory-level course in which students are enrolled only because they are required to be. This paper reports on apparent student engagement successes in two introductory-level courses in a computer science department, and compares some of these results to course results from other disciplines. Each pair of courses involved different pedagogy and results. The author describes the use of an electronic student response system in one course, and the use of the same student response system combined with pre-lecture videos in a second course. The possible relationship between the use of these pedagogical tools and student engagement is explored.
