This poem, “The Rime of the Ancyent Programmer,” captures the life and experiences of a software veteran who has spent more than three decades in the software industry. The poet recounts his experiences from his early days as a programmer on IBM mainframes to how he has learned and adapted to the latest technologies and technological advancements. The poem offers thought-provoking insights into the software industry where time flies and change is the only certainty. It recounts how a person has to learn different languages and technologies on different machines and different operating environments to survive, thrive, and succeed in the software profession. For experienced people who have been in the industry for some time, this poem is a trip down memory lane. For new people who are unfamiliar with what the profession was like a few decades ago, this poem offers an insider’s view. Jenkins ends with the hope that if he has not succeeded in giving readers enough ideas to cope with the changing nature of the industry, he has at least succeeded in entertaining. In my opinion, he has succeeded in both. This is a lovely poem and a great read. Online Computing Reviews Service
