ABSTRACT
Question-answering dialogue systems have found many applications in interactive learning environments. This paper is concerned with one such application for Army leadership training, where trainees input free-text questions that elicit pre-recorded video responses. Since these responses are already crafted before the question is asked, a certain degree of incoherence exists between the question that is asked and the answer that is given. This paper explores the use of short linking dialogues that stand in between the question and its video response to alleviate the problem of incoherence. We describe a set of experiments with human generated linking dialogues that demonstrate their added value. We then describe our implementation of an automated method for utilizing linking dialogues and show that these have better coherence properties than the original system without linking dialogues.

Implementing clarification dialogues in open domain question answering
We examine the implementation of clarification dialogues, a mechanism for ensuring that question answering systems take into account user goals by allowing them to ask series of related questions either by refining or expanding on previous questions ...
Distilling dialogues: a method using natural dialogue corpora for dialogue systems development
ANLC '00: Proceedings of the sixth conference on Applied natural language processingWe report on a method for utilising corpora collected in natural settings. It is based on distilling (re-writing) natural dialogues to elicit the type of dialogue that would occur if one the dialogue participants was a computer instead of a human. The ...
Question/Answering Clarification Dialogues
MICAI '08: Proceedings of the 7th Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence: Advances in Artificial IntelligenceThe presented (Question Answering) system uses clarification dialogues in order to disambiguate the possible meaning of user questions in natural language. The system will only query the user when commitment to some meaning is relevant for the final ...
