Abstract

Online students may perform as well as those in traditional classrooms, but what about the quality of their learning experience?

          This article discusses the results of student evaluations from two sections?one lecture-based and one Internet-based?of a course in an MBA program. The discussion touches on several of the critical issues involved in computer-mediated learning: the quality of learning, the implications of the 24/7 demands on the professor's time, the cost, and so on. The article concludes with an appeal to avoid the potential loss of educational quality in Internet delivery (quality being defined as a function of student satisfaction), as well as a suggestion that universities might need to rethink how professors' teaching tasks are allocated, depending on the teaching platform. The article is a provocative, if frustrating, contribution to the discussion about the merits, qualities, and consequences of Internet delivery on student learning. Hirschheim does not provide any description of the courses, so the reader has to imagine what a course delivered via the Internet without "lectures, discussion, questions, assignments group work and the professor's views and perspectives" might be like. A second weakness of the article is the assumption that quality education is defined as a function of student satisfaction. Should teaching material be selected in terms of the potential emotional relationship students might have to it, or is a professor's educated opinion about the value of material enough__?__ Distance learning via the Internet is already changing many elements of higher education?the question is whether such changes are driven by cost concerns, students' emotions, or the rigors of academic discipline.
